A North River man who shot and nearly killed his son last September was a “battered dad” acting in self defense, the man’s attorney said as a trial got under way Wednesday in Grays Harbor Superior Court.  In his opening statement, defense attorney David Butler, told the jury that Guy Covey has a reputation for violence that may stem from drug use. He had a pattern of bullying his father to get what he wanted, Butler said, adding that Dwight Covey had told several people over the years that he thought his son wanted to kill him.
